About

We make innovative sensors that measure and monitor dissolved gases including: CO₂, CH₄, and total dissolved gas pressure, TDGP. These measurements are very sensitive indicators of the health of aquatic systems on our changing planet.

For more than 20 years, Pro-Oceanus has designed and manufactured industry-leading dissolved gas sensors. Through technical innovation over these last two decades, we now offer a variety of reliable dissolved CO2, CH4 and TDGP sensors to suit any application.

Pro-Oceanus understands the complexities of measuring dissolved gases in all types of environments. We strive to provide the highest level of technical and scientific support to customers, allowing for the most informed decisions on sensor requirements to be made.

Our proudly Canadian company delivers the largest range of submersible dissolved CO2 sensors in market. This selection of rugged CO2 probes makes Pro-Oceanus the only supplier you need for dissolved CO2 monitoring equipment.

Pro-Oceanus instruments have been integrated onto major national and international observing systems such as US Ocean Observatories Initiative, European FixO3, and Ocean Networks Canada and have been used by hundreds of other organizations in over 30 countries.

Our History

Pro-Oceanus Systems Incorporated (PSI) was founded in 1998, driven by the need to measure dissolved gases in situ with a focus on providing high degree of accuracy and reliability.

Our Team

Bruce Johnson, PhD

Dr. Johnson is President and co-founder of PSI. He has a B.Sc. in chemical engineering and a Ph.D. in chemical oceanography. He has developed a broad range of oceanographic instrumentation over 35 years in the field and has more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. His research has been in areas as diverse as gas exchange, atmospheric aerosols, Holocene climate, dynamics of methane in sediments, aquatic particle dynamics, sediment mechanics, aquatic chemical fractionation and ocean optics.

Craig McNeil, PhD

Dr. McNeil is Vice President and co-founder of PSI. He has a B.Sc. in physics/electronics and a Ph.D. in physical oceanography. He has developed and worked with dissolved gas sensors for more than 15 years and has published widely on measurements and interpretation of dissolved gases in the oceans. His special skills lie in modeling, including instrument simulations, instrument design, test and testing facilities design, and measurement interpretation.

Bryan Schofield

Bryan Schofield, PSI’s Design and Production Manager, is at the heart of most activities at Pro-Oceanus. He has 25 years of experience in instrument development and testing. His skills include machining, electronics, instrument design and instrument testing. He has broad experience in making laboratory and field measurements. Bryan also holds a Marine Master Certificate.

Mark Barry, PhD

Dr. Barry leads the Business Development and Sales at Pro-Oceanus. He has a BSc in Chemistry and Earth Sciences and received his PhD in Oceanography from Dalhousie University in 2010. He has developed instrumentation for measuring properties of sediment mechanics and has worked on all stages of sensor development from research to commercialization. Dr. Barry joined Pro-Oceanus in 2012 as a research and development scientist and has since adapted those skills to marketing, sales, and business development to help support a broad range of activities at Pro-Oceanus.
